July 12, 2008, Gonzales, Texas.
A swarm of yellow jackets will be buzzing through Gonzales on October 18. Relax; they're not stinging insects. Instead, on that Saturday, the roads in and around Gonzales will be swarming with hundreds of brightly dressed cycling enthusiasts. It's all part of the Gonzales Rotary Club's annual Cannon Express Tour Bicycle Ride, which raises money for area charitable projects including the preservation and beautification of this historic Texas town.

"Gonzales hosted more than 130 riders last year," said Chuck Norris, Chairman of the event. "And we expect many more this time, with riders from as far away as Louisiana and Georgia already registered."

Each rider chooses one of four courses, ranging from ten to 65 miles in length. Rest stops provide refreshments every ten miles, and volunteers drive the course to provide first aid and mechanical support.

"This event is important for Gonzales tourism, with many riders shopping, dining and lodging here," said Rotary President Patrick Hodges. "Our town has the friendliest people, and riders can look forward to being treated with courtesy while on the ride, and greeted warmly when stopping to visit."

Conveniently located an hour from Austin or San Antonio, and two hours from Houston, routes for the Cannon Express let riders experience the beautiful landscapes found where the Guadalupe and San Marcos rivers meet. Rolling hills, oak-strewn fields and winding rivers serve as the backdrop for this unique family ride.

The Rotary Club of Gonzales is part of a worldwide organization of business leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world.

"Rotary is a group of like-minded business managers using its talents and business acumen to solve problems and create opportunities in our community," said Hodges.
